What causes nipple inversion?
Nipple inversion can occur in both women and men. It may be a defect that occurs at birth. Others may experience nipple inversion later on in life due to changes to the breasts and surrounding tissues. Any changes in the breast can cause cosmetic imperfections and may make patients feel embarrassed by the look of their chest.
How is nipple inversion treatment performed?
Dr. Dimitrios Motakis evaluates patients to determine if they are a proper candidate for nipple inversion surgery. In most situations, he can treat the condition by releasing the fibers that keep the nipple inward. This allows the fibers to stretch or spread and addresses the tension holding them in their current position. In the past, doctors would cut the milk ducts to release the nipple, but this is a treatment that our team will often avoid due to the fact that it can keep a woman from being able to breastfeed in the future. With the newer technique of releasing fibers, women can still breastfeed. This is due to the more conservative nature of the nipple inversion technique used by our plastic surgeon.
