What Is A Mommy Makeover Surgery?

As not all women are able to reclaim their pre-pregnancy figures using traditional methods, a mommy makeover is designed to address some of the most common post-pregnancy body concerns. Many women will struggle with stubborn fat deposits, sagging and deflated breasts, as well as, weakened abdominal muscles, stretch marks and loose abdominal skin or a bad c-section scar. A combination of procedures can help in restoring a mother’s body to a more youthful appearance and contour.

In most cases, the two areas most dramatically effected by pregnancy and breastfeeding are the abdomen and breast. In this case, the most common procedures would be a tummy tuck and a breast augmentation performed on the same day to get the desired results. Other procedures include a breast lift (mastopexy), liposuction to remove excess fat deposits and sculpt the body, and labial reduction.

Who Is A Good Candidate For A Mommy Makeover?

You may be a candidate for a mommy makeover if your body has experienced significant alterations due to pregnancy and breastfeeding. There is no specific chronological age to have this surgery; most candidates consider this as early as two years after giving birth or at any other time during their life. The best candidates are those who are in good health, don’t smoke and have realistic expectations. Patients that undergo this surgery find the results to be life-changing, displaying an increase in confidence, self-esteem and comfort in social settings. Dr. Motakis using his artistic skills and advanced surgical techniques will provide the candidate with a natural, refreshed and youthful body appearance.

The Procedure

As mentioned above, the procedure consists of a combination of different procedures performed at the same time. The various procedures offered by Dr. Motakis for a Mommy Makeover are described below in detail. Generally, a combination of a tummy tuck and breast augmentation takes between 3 and 4 hours, is performed under general anesthesia and the patient is required to stay at our Avenue Road fully accredited on-site surgical facility overnight after the procedure.

Tummy Tuck

During a Tummy Tuck, the excess skin and fat of your abdominal wall is removed, and the underlying muscles are tightened if necessary. The incision is hidden very low above the pubic area and is hidden by the underwear. The length of the incision depends on the excess of skin present; the greater the skin excess, the longer that horizontal scar. While incision lines are permanent, they are hidden wherever possible, and usually, significantly fade and improve over time and often become imperceptible. In some cases, there are also, two drains are used that serve to remove any excess fluid produced during the early stages of healing. These drains are usually removed one week after the procedure. To minimize scarring, Dr. Motakis uses only internal dissolving sutures and is careful to conceal incisions in the lower part of the abdomen below the level of the underwear.

Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation can be performed in several surgical ways, but almost always involves the use of implants. In every instance, treatment is customized to reflect the patient’s needs and to create a breast the patient desires and is comfortable with. Pre-operatively, Dr. Motakis, his nurse and the patient assess the ideal size in several different ways to assure the patient will be happy. Implants are often used to give women with small or unevenly sized breasts an enhanced, firmer, fuller appearance. Breast implant options fall within two categories: saline (salt water) or silicone cohesive gel (“gummy bear” implants).

During breast enhancement surgery, which typically lasts between one to two hours, implants are inserted beneath the natural breast tissue or the muscle of the chest (pectoralis). Dr. Motakis makes a small incision either directly beneath the breasts or around the areola, through which the implant is inserted. To minimize scarring, Dr. Motakis uses only internal dissolving sutures and is careful to conceal incisions in the natural creases of the breast.

What Is The Recovery Period After A Mommy Makeover?

You will receive instructions from Dr. Motakis concerning caring for your incisions while you recover from surgery. On average, it takes approximately 2 to 3 weeks to recover from a combined tummy tuck and breast augmentation procedure. A supportive garment and bra will be provided to you, this will need to be worn for at least 4 weeks after the surgery. Initially, you should expect a few days of swelling and bruising with some discomfort which is treated with mild analgesics. You will likely be able to resume light activities 48-72 hours after your surgery, it is recommended any physical activity such as exercise only be resumed only after the fourth week. You will likely need approximately one week off from work.

What Are The Risk Factors Of A Mommy Makeover?

Dr. Motakis makes every effort to execute the procedure in the most meticulous way, however, as with any surgery, bleeding, infection, changes in sensation, reaction to anesthesia, or clot formation are among the risks of mommy makeover surgery, although these are very rare. Every precaution is taken during and after the procedure to minimize these risks. Dr Motakis and his team will discuss these risks in detail during your consultation.

Are There Any Alternatives To Mommy Makeover?

Variations of the procedures include a mini-tummy tuck and an umbilical float abdominoplasty. In cases where the breast has drooped extensively, breast lift may be required (see mastopexy and mastopexy augmentation.)

Can Mommy Makeover Be Combined With Other Procedures?

Many of Dr. Motakis’ patients combine different surgeries, however, as a mommy makeover already is a combination of two or more surgeries, it usually cannot be combined with any other procedures.
