Mini-Tummy Tuck (Mini Abdominoplasty)

Many women after childbirth have abdominal excess skin and stretch marks that is limited to the lower part of the abdomen. Their body has bounced back very well other than that lower tummy skin. In some women, the c-section scar may appear folded over, ropy or uneven. This excess skin and fat can become a nuisance as it may interfere with one’s ability to wear certain clothing, feel comfortable in a bathing suit or engage in physical activity.

What is a Mini-Tummy Tuck?

A mini-tummy tuck surgery, also known as partial abdominoplasty, is a procedure that removes the excess fat and skin in the lower part of the abdominal region. This procedure is indicated in cases where only the skin below the belly button stretched after pregnancy and where the is no significant muscle serration or hernias. Dr. Motakis has expertly performed such procedures allowing his patients to live a comfortable, confident and active lifestyle.

Who Is A Good Candidate For A Mommy Makeover?

You may be a candidate for a mini-tummy tuck surgery if the lower part of your tummy has experienced some alterations due to pregnancy and/or weight loss. There is no specific chronological age to have this surgery, most women consider this as early as two years after giving birth or 6 months after having lost weight and remained stable.

The best candidates are those who are in good health, don’t smoke and have realistic expectations. Patients that undergo this surgery find the results to be life-changing, displaying an increased level of confidence, self-esteem, and comfort in social settings.

How is Mini-Tummy Tuck Surgery Performed?

Generally, a mini-tummy tuck surgery takes between 1 and 2 hours and is performed under general anesthesia. During a mini-tummy tuck, the excess skin and fat in a certain area of your abdominal wall is removed. The incision is hidden very low above the pubic area and is hidden by the underwear. In most cases the length of the incision is short, however, this depends on the excess of skin present; the greater the skin excess, the longer that horizontal scar.

While incision lines are permanent, they are hidden wherever possible, and usually, significantly fade and improve over time and often become imperceptible. In drains are not used during this procedure making the recovery easier.

What Is The Recovery Period After A Mini-Tummy Tuck?

You will receive instructions from Dr. Motakis concerning caring for your incisions while you recover from surgery. On average, it takes approximately 1 to 2 weeks to recover from a mini-tummy tuck procedure. A supportive garment will be provided to you that will need to be worn for a few weeks after the surgery. Initially, you should expect a few days of swelling and bruising with discomfort which is treated with mild analgesics. You will likely be able to resume light activities 48-72 hours after your surgery, it is recommended any physical activity such as exercise only be resumed only after the 3rd week.

You will likely need approximately 5-7 days off from work.

What Are The Risk Factors Of A Mini-Tummy Tuck?

Dr. Motakis makes every effort to execute the procedure in the most meticulous way, however, as with any surgery, reaction to anesthesia, bleeding, infection, changes in sensation are among the risks of mini-tummy tuck surgery, although these are extremely rare.

Are There Any Alternatives To Tummy Tuck?

In cases where the skin excess is minimal, skin tightening may be accomplished with the use of a radiofrequency device known as Forma Plus©. Although multiple treatments are required, the skin will become visibly firmer over the period of a few months. This non-invasive procedure is painless and requires no downtime. In the case of stretch marks, a multitude of treatments are available. These include fractional CO2 laser (SmartSkin ©), Fractora©, micro needling and platelet-rich plasma injections (PRP) or IPL. You will need to see Dr. Motakis in consultation to discuss which treatment is best suited for you.

Variations of the mini-abdominoplasty procedure include liposuction or less frequently umbilical float abdominoplasty. Umbilical float abdominoplasty is similar to a mini-abdominoplasty but is only performed in patients with a very high positioned umbilicus. In cases where there is significant muscle separation, and excess skin though, full abdominoplasty surgery remains the best option available.

Can A Mini-Tummy Tuck Be Combined With Other Procedures?

Many of Dr. Motakis’ patients combine their mini-tummy tuck procedure with other cosmetic procedures offered at the clinic. These procedures frequently include breast augmentation, labial reduction, as well as liposuction, among others.
