Because the eyes are the aesthetic focal point of the face, eyelid surgery can significantly enhance your appearance. If your eyelids look puffy or have bags under your eyes, or if you have excess skin and wrinkling around your eyes, eyelid surgery can give you a refreshed and more youthful appearance. Both men and women wishing to diminish the effects of aging or reduce certain inherited traits are candidates for the procedure. Also known as blepharoplasty, this procedure smoothens out the area around the eyes allowing patients to look more alert and ‘well-rested’.
Eyelid surgery actually constitutes one of the most frequently sought procedures in Dr Motakis’ practice. The reason behind it is that eyelids are the focus of every human interaction and don’t only reflect how someone looks, but also how they feel. Often patients will claim they are tired of people telling them they look tired. In other cases patients continuously lift their eyebrows in an attempt to diminish the amount of skin draping over their eyes. So even though a large group of patients are seeking to look youthful, many mature man and woman choose to undergo eyelid surgery not to look younger, but just in order to appear how they actually feel: relaxed and rested.
What Does Eyelid Surgery Involve?
Blepharoplasty involves removing excess fat and skin from around your eyes, and can be performed on the lower eyelids, upper eyelids or both. The eyes are always protected by large plastic contact lenses, which cover the entire cornea. If you select an upper eyelid procedure, Dr. Motakis makes an incision along the natural crease of the upper eyelid in order to remove the excess skin. The right amount is determined by pinching the excess skin and making sure the eye closes perfectly before any skin removal. If excess fat protrudes in the inner upper corner of the eye, it is removed at the same time. All stitches are very fine and dissolve within the week thus making the recovery even easier. Bruising and swelling during this procedure is often minimal and recovery ranges from 1-2 weeks. In lower eyelid surgery, excess fat is removed in a gentle fashion from the inside of the lower eyelid. In order to remove excess skin incisions are made directly below the eyelashes. The excess skin is pinched and only what is in excess is removed, assuring no excess pull on the lower eyelid that will change the shape of the eye. Occasionally patients have a lax lower eyelid and a supporting stitch is necessary on the lateral aspect of the eye for further support. Because the incisions are made along the creases of the eye, the appearance of scars is virtually imperceptible. For patients without excess skin who are simply having fat removed (trans-conjunctival blepharoplasty), the incision is made inside the lower eyelid so scars are concealed entirely.
Performed under general or local anaesthesia, eyelid surgery typically takes one to two hours and the patient goes home the same day after recovering for a few hours in our surgical facility.
Are You an Ideal Candidate for Eyelid Surgery?
Whether you want to reduce the appearance of aging around the eyes presenting as wrinkly, excessive or saggy upper or lower eyelid skin, or eliminate an undesired inherited trait such as puffiness, you may be a prime candidate for a blepharoplasty.Eyelid surgery is not always the right choice if you wish to completely eliminate crow’s feet, reduce the colour of dark circles under the eyes or decrease the finer lines around your eyelids. However, all these concerns can be addressed with other procedures such as medical skin products, botox, fillers, platelet rich plasma, peels, radiofrequency skin ablation and tightening and lasers. If you want to address these issues, you can schedule a free consultation with Dr. Motakis to discuss what cosmetic procedures are best suited you.
