What Does a Breast Augmentation Involve?
Breast augmentation can be performed in a number of surgical ways, but almost always involves the use of implants. In every instance, treatment is customized to reflect the patient’s needs and to create a breast the patient desires and is comfortable with. Pre-operatively, Dr. Motakis himself with the patient assess the ideal size in several different ways to assure the patient will be happy. Implants are often used to give women with small or unevenly sized breasts an enhanced, firmer, fuller appearance. Breast implant options fall within two categories: saline (salt water) or silicone cohesive gel (“gummy bear” implants). In your private consultation, Dr. Motakis will discuss the advantages and potential disadvantages of each implant selection.
During breast enhancement surgery, which typically lasts between one to two hours, implants are inserted beneath the natural breast tissue or the muscle of the chest. Dr. Motakis makes a small incision either directly beneath the breasts or around the areola, through which the implant is inserted. To minimize scarring, Dr. Motakis is careful to conceal incisions in the natural creases of the breast.
Recovery after surgery takes several weeks during which a supportive bra is worn. Dr. Motakis also performs breast implant removal procedures for those who wish to reverse an enlargement or change the size, shape or feel of their breasts.
Are You an Ideal Candidate for Breast Augmentation?
Women who have small breasts or a noticeable asymmetry, or whose breast size or shape has decreased or changed as a result of pregnancy, breastfeeding, significant weight loss or aging, may wish to undergo breast augmentation.Ideal candidates for breast augmentation have good skin elasticity, minimal or moderate sagging, are in good physical health, and have realistic expectations about the surgical results. If breast sagging or ptosis is present a concurrent lift may be necessary for an optimal result (augmentation mastopexy).
